What is two-factor authentication (2FA)?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a security process in which users provide two different authentication factors to verify themselves. It is an identity and access management (IAM) security method that requires two forms of identification to access resources and data. 2FA gives businesses the ability to monitor and help safeguard their most vulnerable information and networks.

The difference between two-factor authentication, 2FA, and multi-factor authentication, MFA, is that 2FA, or two-factor authentication, involves two sets of steps to identify a user. In addition, 2FA utilizes one-time passcodes that are time-sensitive to prevent identity theft.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) works by requiring two different types of information to verify your identity. The first factor is something we know, such as our password, and the second factor is something we have, such as a mobile device or security key. When we sign in to a service that requires 2FA, we’ll be prompted to enter our password as usual. Then, we’ll be asked to provide the second factor of authentication, which could be a code sent to our mobile device, a fingerprint scan, or a security key.

There are many 2FA apps available, but some of the most popular ones include Google Authenticator, Authy, and Microsoft Authenticator. These apps generate one-time codes that we can use to verify our identity when we sign in to a service that requires 2FA. Some apps also support biometric authentication, such as fingerprint scanning or facial recognition, which can make the process even more secure.

The process for using 2FA can vary depending on the service we’re using, but generally, we’ll need to enable 2FA in our account settings. Once we’ve done that, we’ll be prompted to enter a code from our 2FA app when we sign in to the service.
