I’ve set up a small IRC server for the Tom’s IT Cafe community.
IRC is a lightweight text-based chat system that has been used on the Internet for decades.
It’s simple, fast, and works on almost any device.
The server is fully encrypted and supports SASL authentication and host cloaking.
Connection details:
Server: irc.silentarchitect.org
Port: 6697
TLS: required
Suggested clients:
Android: HexDroid
Desktop: WeeChat, Irssi, or Pidgin
Example (WeeChat):
/server add silent irc.silentarchitect.org/6697 -tls/connect silent
After connecting, you can register your nickname with NickServ.
SASL authentication is available after registration.
/msg NickServ REGISTER password email@example.com
Discord will remain the main chat platform, but this IRC server is available for anyone who prefers a lightweight, self-hosted communication channel.
